January 2008: The thinnest notebook on the planet, it's just 4mm to 19.4mm thick and weighs only 1.36kg.

It's lighter and thinner than anything else and it's still a Mac. There's a drop-down door that gives you the basic ports you need (USB, micro-DVI, headphone), but at heart this machine is wireless, including 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. USB-based ethernet and SuperDrive are available.

February 2008: Now with faster processors. The MacBook comes with a 2.1 or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, built-in iSight camera, Front Row and Apple Remote, Bluetooth, Airport Extreme Wi-Fi and a glossy 13.3" widescreen display.

February 2008: Now with faster processors, multi-touch trackpads, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics with more RAM and built-in 802.11n for the fastest wireless. Optional 2.6GHz processor too.

There's an LED-backlit display (15.4": 1440x900, 17" 1680x1050), and on the 17" model (1680x1050) there's the option to upgrade to better-than-high-definition resolution (1920x1200). Optional glossy screens on all models, and of course there's an iSight camera embedded above the screen for instant worldwide videoconferencing. The ExpressCard/34 slot provides expansion for extra networking, FireWire 800 or eSATA connections.

If you've ever tripped over a laptop power cord, you'll appreciate the MagSafe magnetically coupled power connector. It disconnects easily, saving the laptop from a fall.

What else? Analog/digital audio input and output, 8x SuperDrive, Bluetooth, Gigabit ethernet and FireWire 400 and 800. From the last generation: Sudden Motion Sensor, dual-DVI support for the 30" Cinema Display. The 17" model adds an extra USB port, larger screen and the HD-resolution screen option.
